Raiders v. Eagles as Close to Prediction Gurantee as You'll Get

Author: Matt Sweet

Two teams from opposite sides of the NFL spectrum will be on display this Sunday as the wayward Oakland Raiders look to right the ship against the Philadelphia Eagles (-14.5.)

I’m sorry, when I said right the wayward ship, what I meant to say was un-capsize the sunken ship, haul it back to dry land, and make all hands on deck walk the plank, led by their disaster of a captain, owner Al Davis. Known for his dubious antics at the helm of his beloved Raiders franchise (as well as his signature Starter jacket circa 1996) Davis has been able to successfully obliterate a team that made the Super Bowl in 2002. 7 short years, 5 head coaches, and nearly a dozen starting quarterback later, the Raiders find themselves at 1-4 on the season, losing their last 3 contests by 20 points or more. Led by their most recent pocket prospect, 2007 number one draft pick and current starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the Raiders are dead last in the NFL in total yards, the only team that has yet to gain 1000 yards this season. And that’s without going into their bye week yet.

Compared to the Oakland Raiders, a troop of girl scouts would seem like a safe bet. This week, the Philadelphia Eagles are those girl scouts. Coming off a 33-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Eagles (3-1, and 2nd in the NFL in total yards gained) are showing signs of being a favorite for at least a wild card spot. Quarterback Donovan McNabb made his return in the victory, coming back from missing 2 weeks from a rib injury suffered in the season opener. Throwing for 264 yards on 16-21 effort and 3 touchdowns, McNabb showed no signs of discomfort, much to the delight of Philly fanatics everywhere with the most challenging stretch of their season on the horizon. For the record, this game is not included in this stretch.

I know that I’m supposed to make these pick em articles more suspenseful, letting the reader take a fair and balanced assessment at some strong facts for each team, and coming to a conclusion on their own, some agreeing with my prediction, some not. But after staring at this game for the last few hours, I just can’t do it. The Raiders stink. If there were a way for a team to score negative points (which I’m not convinced this Oakland squad can’t do) they would. I tried to justify a way that the Raiders could potentially squeeze out a victory, but it’s as likely as squeezing water from a rock. Al Davis was quoted as saying that he would not retire until the Raiders win two more Super Bowls, or he dies, whichever comes first. So, for this article, we’re going to bring you two predictions.

Final Score: 37-3 Eagles
